CENIC Announces New and Diverse Fiber Route from Sacramento to Northern California

CENIC has built a new and diverse fiber path between Sacramento and northern California, adding to its inland route. The new path creates a diverse 260-mile regional loop from Sacramento and back, traveling through Colusa, Corning, Palo Cedro, and Chico. The path has 3.2 terabits per second of capacity and includes new nodes in Chico and Palo Cedro.

CENIC has built a 400 gigabit-per-second (Gbps) single-carrier optical circuit between Los Angeles and Riverside in California, one of the first-ever 400G superchannels to be deployed by a US regional research and education network. Construction included upgrading nodes in Los Angeles, Tustin, Oceanside, San Diego (home to the San Diego Supercomputer Center), Escondido, Sun City, and Riverside to 400G capabilities.

The University of Guam today unveiled its new ultra-high-speed 100-Gbps network during an event at the UOG Office of Information Technology. The Guam Open Research and Education eXchange (GOREX) network now connects Guam to Hawai'i and California via the new SEA-US fiber-optic submarine cable.

First 100G International Research and Education Backbone Network in Asia and Across the Pacific

NICT, NSCC, and SingAREN together have completed a high-speed 100 Gbps international network linking Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan -- infrastructure that will be the backbone of the north- to southeast Asia network for international research and education networks (RENs) in the region.

The California Academy of Sciences Joins CENIC

The California Academy of Sciences now has a direct connection to CENIC’s California Research and Education Network (CalREN), and from there to the world. At a speed of 10 Gbps per second, this access to the ultra-high bandwidth of the CENIC network will provide scientists and patrons of the Academy with fifty times more capacity, enabling new opportunities to engage, create, invent, and learn. Prior to completing the connection to CalREN, the Academy was operating with 200 Mbps of connectivity. This level of enhanced connectivity is already making a difference in day-to-day operations.

Pacific Wave Announces World’s First Trans-Pacific 100-Gigabit R&E Network

Pacific Wave is pleased to announce that the Pacific Northwest Gigapop (PNWGP) has established the world’s first 100-Gigabit per second (Gbps) research and education (R&E) network link between Asia and the U.S., with related transit, peering, and exchange fabric. Pacific Wave will provide this 100Gbps capability to the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded International Research Network Connections (IRNC) TransPAC4 project, led by Indiana University. Pacific Wave recently received a five-year NSF IRNC award to serve as the U.S. Pacific Rim’s open and distributed interconnection, peering, and exchange fabric, including Software-Defined Exchange (SDX), Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and research DMZ capabilities.
