Targeted Network Announcements

In response to community demand, CENIC has developed a new database with the capability of sending targeted notifications to our community, which we will begin using on April 7th, 2022. This new database together with valuable feedback from various CENIC Associates and RENs has contributed to the development of an improved outage and maintenance announcement profile that includes the following changes:

  • The current announcement profile listing Loss of Connectivity (LOC) and Loss of Diversity (LOD) will be retired and will be replaced with a concise list of impacted Service IDs, previously known as CLRs (Circuit Layout Records). Authorized network contacts will receive email notifications if their services are impacted.
  • We will email Associates their list of Service IDs next week. The Service IDs will display the Associate name, A/Z location, scope of service, and numerical identifier. An example can be found in the first question of the FAQ included below.
  • Notifications will continue to be sent to ops-announce and ops-problem-detail mailing lists.

We anticipate that the transition of providing targeted announcements and Service IDs will provide more value to our Associates.

The database Event Correlation engine has the ability to access CENIC’s Network Management System’s (NMS) alarms, correlate impact to Associates’ Service IDs , and auto-generate an announcement template. Network contacts will be sent targeted announcements if their Service IDs are impacted.

Service ID is synonymous with Circuit Layout Record (CLR). This is the top-level identifier that Event Correlation reports on and is included in the announcements if impact to the Service has been identified. Service IDs are correlated with site contacts and are bcc’d on the announcements.

Some Associate connections are part of a Ring Service topology. The Ring Service represents the Associate's LAN connection and this object represents the Associate's connectivity in the ring in a "CLR-like" manner.

A Ring topology is a group of CLRs that connect two (or more) LAN handoffs (even for a single Associate) to two (or more) hub sites.

If there is an impact to the Ring topology, the announcement will list the Ring Service ID impacted, as well as the directly related COM path that is impacted, if applicable. All Associates that are part of the Ring topology will be notified in the announcement.

A COM Path is a path that is shared among two or more Service IDs. Associates that are a part of a Ring topology will be provided a list of their Ring Service IDs as well as a list of the COM paths related to the Ring topology.

No. The previous announcement profile listing Loss of Connectivity (LOC) and Loss of Diversity (LOD) will be retired (as of 4/7/22) and replaced with a concise list of impacted Service IDs, previously known as CLRs (Circuit Layout Records). Authorized network contacts will receive email notifications if their services are impacted.

No. Similar to previous announcement methodology, Backbone Service IDs will not be listed in the new announcement profile.

The database contains a list of Service IDs that are managed by each organization. Each organization contains a list of authorized network contacts that will be emailed (bcc’d) through the announcement if their Service ID(s) have been identified to be impacted by an outage or maintenance. If you would like to update your list of authorized network contacts, please email noc@cenic.org.

Beginning April 7th, CENIC Operations will use this new announcement tool. CENIC site network contacts will then have the option to unsubscribe to the general distribution lists (ops-announce and/or ops-problem-detail), if they prefer to receive only targeted announcements. Use the following links to unsubscribe to the general announcement lists if desired.
