Thousands of circuits purchased at bulk rates on behalf of our members and managed by CENIC reach out from the backbone to penetrate every part of California, connecting over 12,000 schools, colleges, universities, libraries, and other research and cultural organizations.
All of these endpoints are connected to CalREN either directly or via intermediate sites. At our Interactive Endpoint Map, you can select map overlays for counties or legislative districts, zoom in and out to view the connectivity for one or more member segments, and see how exactly sites like individual K-12 schools and branch libraries connect to CalREN behind their County Offices of Education or Main Libraries. You can even download a particular map view as a PNG for your own use.
Three independent networks operate simultaneously over CalREN.
At our list of CalREN Sites by Tier, you can see which tiers (in addition to CalREN-DC) your institution and others connect to.
You can see at the map above that the CalREN backbone nodes are spread throughout California and sometimes cluster in specific geographic areas. It can sometimes be very useful for network engineers and others to know which backbone nodes their institutions connect to. At our list of CalREN Sites by Backbone Node, you'll find a list of all the CalREN backbone nodes along with the institutions that connect to them.
