Middle Mile Network Access for California Tribes

CENIC has a long history of action, support, and advocacy on behalf of broadband connectivity for California’s Tribal communities, some of the most historically un- and underserved people in the state. Nearly 20% of California’s federally recognized tribes currently connect to the CENIC and Pacific Wave networks; the state’s middle mile initiative will provide new opportunities for broadband access for those Tribal communities without broadband access.

This new initiative led by the California Department of Technology and supported by CENIC’s newest LLC, GOLDENSTATENET, promises to build affordable open-access broadband connections through “middle mile” infrastructure across California, and California Tribal communities will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to connect to a truly future-facing infrastructure and gain access to the broadband-enabled collaborations and innovations that define many aspects of 21st century life.

This middle-mile network infrastructure will provide vital connections between Tribal Communities and the global Internet. The network will provide access to regional ISPs and Tribes at wholesale costs, and at the capacity and speeds that will allow networks to scale to accommodate the needs of entire communities.

CENIC's participation as Third-Party Administrator for California's Middle-Mile Broadband Initiative takes place under the aegis of GOLDENSTATENET, which works with public and private sector partners to create digital equity for all Californians.

Tribal representatives from all of California’s Tribal Nations are urged to contact Matthew Rantanen at tribes@goldenstatenet.org to learn more about participating in this project.
