Categories Press Release

President & CEO Louis Fox is pleased to announce the appointment of John Dundas III as Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of CENIC. Formerly the Director of Voice and Data Networks in the Information Management Systems and Services Department at the California Institute of Technology, Dundas has been part of CENIC since its inception in 1997. He has been on the CENIC Board of Directors since 1999, and he has been an integral voice in the development of CENIC and the California Research & Education Network (CalREN) as a member of the High-Performance Research (HPR) Technical Advisory Council and as Chair of the XD/HPR Committee.

Prior to obtaining his 1986 Master's Degree in Computer Science, Dundas began work at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1977 as part of the programming team on the venerable Voyager flight project. He remained at JPL for the next twenty years, working as a key team member on projects including the Deep Space Network tracking and communication system through which scientists remain in touch with spacecraft throughout the solar system and on the initial computer communications networks at JPL that facilitated collaboration between researchers both there and beyond. John also played a foundational role in the creation of the Los Nettos regional network serving major research and education institutions in the greater Los Angeles area.

In 1997, Dundas joined Caltech as a project manager and was responsible for a complete replacement of the existing campus network with up-to-date fiber-based technology. He then became Director of Information Technology Services at Caltech in 2000, and has been responsible for the Institute's IT infrastructure and services since then.

As a member of CENIC's senior management, Dundas brings an enormous amount of technology and management experience as well as a profound understanding of the needs of the high-performance, cutting-edge research communities served by CalREN. Dundas also brings with him a keen awareness of the evolution of network technology and how it can be implemented for the greatest benefit to those who use it.
