30@30: Celebrating CENIC's 30th Anniversary
We are pleased to announce the launch of a new video series as we mark the 30th anniversary of CENIC. “CENIC 30@30” will introduce you to some of the significant milestones of the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) and its network, the California Research and Education Network, or CalREN—among the most advanced research and education networks in the world with more than 54,000 total miles of CENIC-managed fiber.
The CENIC community’s innovations were a foundation that built upon our common research and education infrastructure, and we have extended the same broadband access and opportunity to many communities across California.
CENIC: California's Research Network Legacy
It all began in the 1990s, when a group of leaders from California’s statewide research and education community realized the new commercial Internet wasn’t designed for their unique, high-performance needs. So they set off to develop their own advanced network that would serve the fast-growing demands of network-enabled research and education.
CalREN Goes Live
Over 1997-1998, CENIC brought the California Research and Education Network fully online. CalREN wasn't just a faster version of what came before. It was a dedicated infrastructure — purpose-built for the institutions shaping California's future.
