For the first time, research and education institutions connected to CENIC and its partner networks will have a direct path to conduct demonstrations at the Optical Fiber & Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC). CENIC has agreed for the next five years to provide a new fiber path that will facilitate 34 Terabits per second of capacity to the OFC exhibition floor at the San Diego Convention Center.
The vision and launch of the new OFC gateway, dubbed OFCnet, is being made possible through the collaboration of CENIC, Ciena, Lumen, SmartCity, EXFO, the University of California San Diego's Qualcomm Institute and Supercomputer Center, and Viavi. Each year, industry and academia will join forces to push the boundaries as they design, build, and deliver this innovative platform for cutting-edge, networking technologies.
OFCnet is available to R&E institutions that are connected to CENIC or that are connected to CENIC’s partner networks including Internet2, Pacific Wave, and Western Regional Network. OFC is the largest global conference and exhibition for optical communications and networking professionals.
To vendors, service providers, or research teams, extensive middle-mile fiber infrastructure can play the role of an elastic testbed that matches real-world production networks.
Hard-to-reach areas may require wireless edge networks to connect to a middle-mile backbone. Tradeoffs in frequency, license status, and power can make it challenging to determine the best solution.
