State Begins Construction on 10,000-mile Broadband Network to Bring High-Speed Internet Service to All Californians

SACRAMENTO – On the heels of Governor Gavin Newsom’s $6.5 billion investment to expand broadband infrastructure and enhance internet access for unserved and underserved communities, today construction began in rural San Diego County on the first leg of the 10,000-mile broadband network aimed at bringing high-speed internet services to all Californians, no matter where they live.

Our national experience of working, studying, and engaging from home during a pandemic was a master class on the impact for those without broadband internet access. The indigenous tribes of California have long experienced that deficit, and Matt Rantanen, referred to as the Cyber Warrior for Tribal Broadband, is dedicated to eliminating that connectivity gap. This session will focus on the development of intensive Tribal Broadband Bootcamps that have provided the technological and human groundwork for engaging with GOLDENSTATENET to bring fiber infrastructure to tribal communities in California. Rantanen, director of technology for the Southern California Tribal Chairmen's Association, will share Bootcamp stories of developing the human network at the core of the resources needed to deliver fiber to hard-to-reach communities.

GSN: California Governor Newsom Announces Initial Middle-Mile Projects

On November 18th, the Governor’s Office announced the initial 18 broadband projects that will begin to comprise the middle-mile network. These initial projects span areas of need across the state, including rural, tribal, and urban communities.
