John is a Cisco Fellow and the CTO of Broadband Access. With over 140 patents (filed and/or issued) and 28 published papers, John is a prolific inventor. John can identify a technical and product opportunity that will provide value to a customer and the company he works for. He has repeatably gone through the stages of creating an idea, architect a solution, writing specifications, pitching the product to customers and executives, getting funding, and then working with a large team to build and ship it.
John joined Cisco when it was a private start-up company in 1989 and later co-founded the Cable BU as an internal startup that grew to $900M in annual revenue. John’s inventions have had a huge impact on the industry and he is well recognized within the cable industry. Some of John's inventions include Remote PHY (a RAN-like architecture for cable), FDX DOCSIS, and DOCSIS bonding, which now are the foundation of all new cable access plants, as well HSSI which formed the early backbone of the Internet.
In 2012, John was inducted into the SCTE Hall of Fame, and in 2015 was inducted into the Cable Pioneer Society. John received the National Innovation Award in China for his invention of Remote PHY, and receive three Pioneer awards in Cisco. John is a 7th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo, a 5th degree Black Belt in Hapkido, a blue belt in Gracie Jui-Jitsu, and enjoys canoeing and skiing.
